Since the light winds in the Bay area are expected to contribute to unhealthy air quality, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued the season’s first winter Spare the Air alert for Saturday. The alert bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors for 24 hours. With the increase in the field of science and technology, new industries are being developed that contribute a lot in the cause of global warming and air pollution.
California’s historic drought taking place since 2011 has led up to 58 million large trees in the state to witness water loss than in turn could prove life threatening, finds a new research. Study researchers at Stanford University’s Carnegie Institution for Science has unveiled that this drought is putting extreme burden on California’s forests.
Researchers, through a recently conducted study, have found that less amount of rainfall in California is causing an irreversible harm to the state’s forests. Previously it has been known that drought in the state has drained lakes and caused landslides.
A team of researchers at Stanford University’s Carnegie Institution for Science in their study concluded that up to 58 million large trees in California have faced loss of water since 2011 due to state’s historic drought.

A disease caused by a fungus called Ceratocystis fimbriata has killed hundreds of thousands of Hawaii’s iconic and native Ohia trees. Experts at the Department of Land and Natural Resources, (DLNR) Hawaii, said that Rapid Ohia Death (ROD) disease is new to Hawaii and it presently impacts just Big Island forests.
But, the DLNR has cautioned that the disease has the potential of spreading throughout the state.
The members of the US Congress said California presently is under high risk to be hit by an earthquake. This is the time when it feels need of having a system that could guide people to reach safer place, and Californians presently are in high need of any such system to help them save themselves from mega earthquake.
Presently, a prototype system has been developed by the researchers at the California Institute of technology (Caltech) and the congress members are asking president Obama to fund the project.
In the remote areas of Canada’s north, an icy highway builds up atop frozen lakes every winter and tundra works as a supply lifeline to far away diamond mines that bustles with traffic for months prior to melting away in the spring.
The busiest ice road of the world is running late this year. The ice formation on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road has received a setback due to unseasonably warm weather. The name of the road has been given after the first and last of hundreds of lakes on the route.
Scientists said that if governments are serious regarding the global warming targets adopted by them in Paris, then there are two options. One is immediate elimination of fossil fuels and second is to look for ways to undo their harm on the climate system in the coming time.
The first one is politically impossible as the world still engages in using coal, oil and natural gas, leaving the option of a significant atmosphere cleanup later this century.
The Beijing government has withdrawn its red alert over high pollution, despite a cloud of dangerous mist over Beijing for the fifth consecutive day. Though the warning has been eased as the government expects the smog to alleviate in the latter half of December 23, Beijing continued to experience further increase in smog on the day. The air contained 327 micrograms per cubic meter of PM2.5, which is the tiniest particle causing sever health risks. The data was collected at Tiananmen Square at 10 a.m.
Significant decline has come in population of wild bees in some of the main agricultural regions of America, unveiled the first national map of bee populations. The researchers have pinpointed 139 counties that are especially at greater risk.
The researchers noticed a trend that wild bees, important pollinator for many crops, are declining and farmland for crops heavily dependent on these pollinators is on rise. The counties at high risk include Northwest, the upper Midwest and Great Plains, west Texas and the southern Mississippi River valley.
